4 Key Ingredients of Quality for 3D in eCommerce

Posted on June 19th, 2019

The impact of 3D modeling in presenting eCommerce services to customers is undoubtedly the most transforming thing that happened in the past decade.

The quality of a 3D model is not only about the similarity between the reference images with the real products, it is more than that. Following are the factors that are important to be reviewed to ensure high quality of 3D models:

  1. Accuracy and Realism:When switching to 3D, the end model should have accurate dimensions as per the reference image to look real. Sometimes customers feel that images are not real. This is due to the poor quality of the model created or too much perfection. Hence, there is just a fine line between being real and being perfect and the balance between the two can lead to a good model.

For instance: Looking at a couch, a real couch would have some natural wrinkles on the seat and back cushion, whereas a perfect model without wrinkles and other natural creases may appear fake.  Ikea has more than 75% Computer Generated Images (CGI) images on its website but one cannot predict if the products are CGI images due to the good quality of models. See the image below.

  1. Usage:When your models look real and accurate, you think your job is done. But actually, it’s not. It is more important than how are you going to use the 3D model as the end-user experience is one of the most important measuring criteria for the quality of 3D assets.

For instance: You get your 3D model designed and have all the renders of that model. However, using it for CGI applications, you don’t need back angles, whereas for 3D viewers and animation you need renders from all possible angles. Similarly, using 3D models for Augmented Reality (AR) application must have fewer poly counts as images with high poly counts make the image-heavy and takes time to load. This can lead to a customer leaving the site or ending the session. So, it is important to decide the purpose of 3D models and how they are going to be used.

  1. Future Proof:It’s not only important to check the usage of the model in the current scenario but to look at how you are going to use that in the coming future. Quality must take that into account as well.

For instance: If you are using a 3D model now, but in the future, you want to switch towards custom models. For custom, models mesh flow and unwrapping are crucial. If you have not paid attention to the mesh flow during the initial phase, you may not be able to use that model. It will need to be created from the scratch. Therefore, it is better to define your future priorities in advance and make sure your models’ quality fulfills your future needs.

  1. Knowledge:And finally, taking care of all of the above in your quality checklist is still not enough, you need a team of people with good knowledge about the minor details related to the usage of models, material creation, etc.
